This Rabelais was first commissioned by the publisher Grant Richards in 1902 prior to that company's bankruptcy in 1904. At the time of this commissioning it was the largest work undertaken by its illustrator William Heath Robinson. The book was subsequently published by Alexander Moring Ltd. in 1912 and by the Navarre Society in limited edition in 1921.
