IT is admitted on all hands that language is the main instrument of thought, and that words are the signs of ideas; but there is not an equally general admission of the necessity of having this instrument of thought as perfect a possible, and the signs of ideas exactly suited to the function; or, if the necessity is generally admitted, the majority of us fail miserably in the attempt to make our practice tally with our conviction.
