Since we were born as children and made various judgments, {some good and some bad}, concerning perceptible1 things before we had the complete use of our reason, we are diverted from a knowledge of the truth by many prejudices;2 and it seems that we cannot be freed from these unless we attempt, once in our life, to doubt all those things in which we find even the slightest suspicion of uncertainty.
