About this book

Harvard trained attorney Watson Smith became involved in archaeology only after practicing law for several years; yet he went on to participate in such important excavations as the Lowry Ruin, the Rainbow Bridge - Monument Valley Expedition, and Awatovi, and in 1983 was awarded the American Anthropological Associations' Kidder Medal for outstanding contributions to American archaeology. When is a Kiva? gathers ten of Smith's essays on archaeological topics - especially on Anasazi and Hopi prehistory - and, more particularly, discusses fine points of ceremonial architecture such as the distinctions between a kiva and the more generic pit house. a biographical essay by Richard Woodbury opens the book, and introductions by Raymond Thompson precede each selection -- Book jacket.
