A dozen or so years ago, as she was charting in Errors and Expectations (1977) the unknown territory we now call basic writing, Mina Shaughnessy noted with alarm how little we know about the students identified as, among other things, "remedial," "developmental," "non-traditional," "new," or even "handicapped."
