The essays in political philosophy which shape this Festschrift are both a tribute and an attempt to capture the influence and insight of the late Professor Dirk Kunert (1941-1991). This distinguished scholar and teacher held the chair of Jan Smuts Professor of International Relations at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa for eight years until his untimely death. He was an unrelenting realist, respected by his students and his peers for the rigorous intellectual debate and criticism which he brought to many subjects in the field of international relations. His particular interests, which bear testimony to his incisive mind and scholarship, were the revision of German historiography, the origins of the Second World war and the Cold War.
