Abstract: A comprehensve health text compares the human body to a machine that consumes energy and produces work. It is illustrated that the body is far more versatile than any machine, is more flexible, and can operate longer though not necessarily faster on the same amount of energy. The concept of the body as a machine was recognized as early as the 16th century and has been studied ever since by those interested in the body's functions. Proper care and maintenance is necessary if this machine is to function properly for a lifetime. Sections of the text examine and discuss different body systems including: sexual and reproductive, nervous, digestive, circulatory, endocrine, and sensory. Suggestions are advanced to make the best use of this machine called the human body. Extensive use is made of photographs and drawings of people and body parts (kbc).
