Small grebe, sexes alike. Breeding crown and back of neck blackish brown; rest of upperparts brown; bare spot at base of bill yellow; tips and inner webs if secondaries, and underwing coverts white; upper throat blackish; lower throat and sides of head and neck chestnut; breast and flanks brownish mixed with silvery grey; belly silvery grey flecked with brown.
