Local government and the Treaty of Waitangi

About this book

"For many years Maori, local, and central government have maintained an unhappy and tense relationship under the Treaty of Waitangi. The interaction has been plagued by historical mistrust, on-going constitutional uncertainty, and the challenge of working through day-to-day practicalities while attempting to adhere to a problematic legislative framework. Local Government and the Treaty of Waitangi takes a new look at these long neglected issues. The authors argue that despite these numerous problems, there is tremendous potential in the relationship." "This book provides topical analysis and exploration of: local government consultation with Maori under the Resource Management Act 1991; Maori representation on local government; emerging jurisprudence regarding local government and the Treaty Labour/Alliance government reforms to the Local Government Act; the obligations of local government under the Treaty; case studies of local government and Maori experiences; and comparisons with Australian experiences." "Local Government and the Treaty of Waitangi is aimed at students and teachers of political science, law, resource management, planning, Maori studies and history, and will be of interest to anyone working in local government."--BOOK JACKET.
