In Fig. 1b, a beam of plane-wave, monochromatic light, EI(r,t) E0exp[i(kI.r-wt)] (1) with electric vector E0 polarised perpendicular to the scattering plane (the plane of the paper), is incident on a region of scattering medium; kI is the propagation vector of the incident light, having magnitude kI |kI| = k = 2/ where is the wavelength of light in the medium; w is its angular frequency.
