Lobbying

About this book

In this book Wyn Grant investigates whether the democratic process is being undermined by political lobbying, and if UK business, through sophisticated and well-resourced lobbying efforts, has undue influence on the decisions of politicians. It assesses the impact of lobbying on the UK political system: how it shapes the political decision-makingprocess, and the extent to which its influence is beneficial or malign. The book outlines the activities of lobbying groups and their methods of persuasion, and the weaknesses of political action groups and social media platforms when faced with the might of the lobbying industry. It examines who lobbies, including business and public interest organisations, and looks at the growing role of commercial lobbyists for hire. It discusses how organisations lobby and seek to influence ministers and civil servants, revealing the shadowy role of all-party parliamentary groups.
