The incidence of severe congenital and genetic disorders that can cause early death or lifelong chronic disease ranges from 15 to 45 per 1,000 live births; this includes congenital malformations (8 to 5 per 1,000), chromosomal anomalies (2 to 5 per 1,000) and Mendelian disorders (4 to 7 per 1,000) (Table I).
