Forty-four consejas and leyendas of Margarita Island, Venezuela, told as heard from the island's rural oral tradition by the ethnographer, historian and chronicler José Joaquín Salazar Franco "Cheguaco"; author's edition, 1989, illustrated by Carlos Stohr. The volume ranges from village character legends (Ño Venancio, Restituto el Mira-Muertos, Ño Ustaquio el Embustero, the piache Tacarí) and religious folk beliefs (San Poteste, the Santa Ciciaca, the Gallo de la Pasión, the Guardian Angel) to toponymic and spirit legends of Guaiquerí ancestry (Guaitoroco, Guayamurí, Moreche, Cocheima, Remanganagua).
