A theology of Eucharistic sacrifice

by Brian Byron

About this book

Many Christians fear that the Roman Catholic belief in the sacrifice of the Mass is a down-grading of the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. The Windsor Statement of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission has gone some of the way towards meeting these misgivings; but the simple fact is that Roman Catholic theology has been groping for centuries, trying to explain in what sense the Mass is a sacrifice. The author's attempt to solve this problem deserves very careful consideration. To put it briefly, his view is that Calvary is a sacrifice analogically and transcendentally; but not literally a sacrifice and a representation of the analogical sacrifice of Calvary, and which conveys the grace of Calvary. In this Eucharistic sacrifice the priest offers Christ himself under the forms of bread and wine.
