"The West." "Religion." It is enough to pronounce these two words one after the other, even if only cautiously, or to yoke them together in a phrase such as "the West and Religion" for us to feel, albeit with some confusion, that we are facing one of the most substantial and challenging problems imaginable-one that seems situated beyond all our learning and science, in that poorly known, shadowy zone where our still rudimentary knowledge discovers and constructs its first associations.
