Summary: Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is de bekendste kunstenaar van de Amerikaanseschilderkunst uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Zijn oeuvre kenmerkt zich door een verraderlijke kalmte in lege straten en landschappen, en door eenzame figuren in een stedelijke omgeving. Zijn schilderijen hebben hun stempel gedrukt op ons beeld van Amerika. In de tentoonstelling en publicatie wordt Hopper voor het eerst in de context van zijn tijd getoond. Naast topstukken van Hopper zijn ruim tachtig meesterwerken uit de collectie van het Whitney Museum of American Art in New York geselecteerd van kunstenaars als Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Sheeler, Man Ray, Lyonel Feininger, Grant Wood en Alfred Stieglitz.
