This novel tells of the spurious adventures of Jacob Small, a man of lost and glorious opportunities. Scratching at romance from his quarters in an old Victorian house on the edge of town with a neglected and bored wife, he remembers his youth, deceiving his ladies as well as himself, a dreamer of dreams, and a teller of tales. He is wasting his genius in 'a bankrupt secondhand bookshop in a bankrupt town' with nothing left but his jokes.
