Thirteen-year-old Ian and his parents travel to Borneo to return an orangutan called Abbie to her natural habitat after rescuing her from wildlife smugglers. Abbie is still traumatized by her capture as a youngster and must learn to survive alone in the jungle without Ian's protection. While Ian is fighting his own battles back home in Australia, Abbie and her baby, Pebble, face an uncertain future with the torching of her jungle home, lack of food and the threat of death or capture by a relentless poacher named Gadas. It is five years before an apprehensive Ian is able to return to Borneo to discover Abbie's fate.
