Analogue optical fibre communications

About this book

One of the many problems facing designers of fibre systems is the basic question of how best to transmit analogue-sourced signals; either on dedicated point-to-point links or as part of mixed-mode traffic on a predominantly digital fibre service network. This book discusses the fundamental principles involved and describes a variety of techniques and applications. The chapters have been contributed by invited researchers with expertise in a range of areas and outline the latest methods and analytical approaches, components and systems. The general topics covered include subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) and coherent techniques, transmission of TV signals, soliton and pulse time modulation methods and performance assessment of subcarrier multiplexed optical systems. Specific technological and system component issues addressed include generation and delivery of millimetre-waves over fibre systems for mobile communications, tuned optical receivers for fibre SCM systems and optical fibre amplifiers and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Written by leading authorities in their fields, this graduate-level text should be of interest to all scientists and engineers concerned with transmission of analogue-sourced information over fibre systems.
