The journalist Nuno Tiago Pinto presents the experiences of 50 Portuguese who were involved in colonial wars. These wars were waged in three theaters: Angola, Guinea and Mozambique. These are first person accounts of acts of courage and friendship, fear, heroism, despair by soldiers, doctors, and nurses who all fought in different ways, on behalf of Portugal. Between 800,000 and one million Portuguese served and, of those, more than nine thousand died in combat or in accidents. The others returned home with physical or psychological wounds of a war that forever transformed and scarred them.
