Deputy US Marshal Piedmont Kelly must return to Cochise, Arizona Territory, when his old friend Sheriff John Henry Stevens is kidnapped, leaving the town at the mercy of a roving band of outlaws and escaped prisoners. To make matters worse, Cochise's craven mayor has just sworn in the sheriff's replacement - a fast talking braggart whose heroic boasts round Kelly's suspicions.
