De Grote Oorlog mobiliseerde wereldwijd bijna 65 miljoen mannen. Frankrijk en Groot-Brittannië zetten spahi's, zoeaven, sikhs, tirailleurs, Chinezen en andere koloniale volken in op de slagvelden van West-Europa. In 1915 speelde ook de Belgische regering met het idee om Congolese soldaten te laten overkomen naar de Westhoek. De beslissing was formeel: nee, geen denken aan. Bij rondvraag in 1918 door het leger bleek dat er toch minstens 32 Congolese soldaten in Belgisch uniform hadden meegevochten in Namen, Antwerpen en aan de IJzer.
