John McKinlay was chosen to the South Australian Burke Relief Expedition, he was the first European to lead a party across the Australian continent from the south to the north coast and return safely. On his second expedition he was stranded by the wet in western Arnhem Land, but saved his party of fifteen by sailing down the East Alligator River in full flood and back to settlement.
