Francis Lieber (born Franz Lieber in Prussia in 1798) was a naturalized American citizen who found time in a life of nearly three-quarters of a century to develop fluency in French, Italian, Spanish, Latin, and ancient Greek, as well as German and English; to risk his life at the Battle of Ligny just prior to Waterloo; to participate in the Greek Revolution against Turkish control; to meet and court his future wife during a year spent teaching in London; to strike up friendships with everyone from Tocqueville to Napoleon's elder brother Joseph; and to teach history and political economy at South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) from 1835 to 1856, history and political science at Columbia College (now Columbia University) from 1857 to 1865, and constitutional history and public law at the Columbia School of Law from 1865 to 1872-all of which subjects he infused with elements of what today would be termed comparative politics and international relations.
