In recent years some attention has been devoted to the history of the law merchant, and our knowledge of the development of the more prominent commercial tribunals of Europe has been increased, but no attempt has been made to investigate the history of the English Court of piepowder, the humble court of the market which the disputes of wayfaring merchants, dusty-footed men, were settled.
