According to the terminology introduced in [19], by free discontinuity problem we mean a variational problems where the functional to be minimized depends on a pair (K, u), K being a hypersurface or more generally a closed set, not prescribed a priori and not necessarily a boundary, and u is a function defined and continuous outside K.
