Seven years before Franz Schubert discovered the poetic cycle Die schone Mullerin (Im Winter zu lesen), or The Beautiful Miller Maid (To Read in Wintertime), in the first volume of Wilhelm Muller's extravagantly entitled anthology Sieben- und siebzig Gedichte aus den hinterlassenen Papieren eines reisenden Waldhornisten (Seventy-seven Poems from the Post-humous Papers of an Itinerant Horn-Player), a real-life drama surrounded the creation both of the poetry and the first musical settings of Muller's miller poems.
