Magical Tome

Selinunte seems to have faced more troubles than any other Greek city in the West. Dissent and unresolved issues put a strain on its unique social and political fabric, which was complex, stratified, and multiethnic. From the archaic period to the destruction of Carthage in 409 AD, this turmoil was reflected in a considerable epigraphic production, represented in particular by the Lex Sacra and by a substantial number of defixiones. This book investigates the different aspects of the unrest in Selinunte, beginning with a multidisciplinary investigation of these documents.
