La conquête des îles de la terre ferme

About this book

"I saw all that. We did it, and we'll forget it if I do not tell it, nobody will believe it when it reads it, but we did it. Cross the unknown sea, defeat armies, destroy our ships, enter this city, seize the great Montezuma, destroy his captains while he is in irons, and survive. These incredible facts, we are the actors, but God alone prepared them on our way. Because what men would dare to imagine all that? And what men would dare to accomplish it? "We, Innocent, we, God if you want, but He did not tell me anything, I dared everything alone, and we all did it." With five hundred types of chance gathered in Cuba, Hernán Cortés discovers and conquers the great empire of the Mexicas, in a series of feats that one would believe drawn from a mischievous novel of chivalry. Never was there greater adventure than this one, and never will there be any more, because from now on the world is closed, known, finished: there will never be another New World. To keep this adventure in memory, I made the story.
