In contrast to a traditional method of analysis of Pausanias' Description of Greece that relies on a search for Pausanias' written sources, this study focuses instead on the oral reception of local traditions, or of traditions retold locally. This focus is based on the consideration of a characteristic feature of Pausanias' work: the size and function of the journey as the initiator and producer of the subject matter.
