As the nineteenth century was drawing to its close the drama critic Clement Scott proclaimed: 'Unquestionably the theatre in this country and all connected with it, be they actors, actresses, managers or dramatists, were never in such a flourishing and healthy condition as they are today, within a few hours of the close of an eventful century' (1899, vol. II, p. 430).
