Although the legal theories underlying copyright protection differ greatly from country to country, the origins of this form of protection in Europe are strikingly similar: the grant of exclusive printing rights or privileges which were made to printers and publishers by national authorities soon after the introduction of printing in Europe in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
