Hvordan støberi- og maskinfabrikken i Århus begyndte at bygge lokomotiver og om forholdet på godt og ondt som eneleverandør af trækkraft til storkunden DSB. Udviklingsinvesteringer var tæt på at knække fabrikken omkring 1930, og under krigen måtte virksomheden træde varsomt mellem tyske og danske interesser. Bogen fortæller desuden om, hvordan DSB førte Frichs og B&W sammen m.h.p. at konstruere et stort dansk diesellokomotiv samt historien om Frichs nedtur i 1970'erne.
