This book is about designing and building database management systems. It integrates concepts from the fields of data structures, compiler theory, operating systems, and software engineering. Mathematical treatment is avoided, but conclusions of recent research and practical results are described in an understandable manner. This book is organized so that students will learn how to design and build a database management system by designing and building a simple database management system called BARE. This system is outlined in early chapters, with extensions and optional features described in detail in later chapters.
