Cold Victory

About this book

In 1947, during a tense period of Finnish history marked by past conflicts with the Soviet Union and geopolitical pressures from both East and West, Louise and Arnie Koski arrive in Helsinki. Arnie takes on the role of military attaché to the American legation, a crucial position for gathering military intelligence following the reestablishment of U.S.-Finland diplomatic ties. Arnie reunites with Mikhail Bobrov, an old comrade from their days in the Soviet Army and now the military attaché for the Soviet legation. Their reunion quickly leads to a friendly but intense agreement to compete in a grueling 500-kilometer ski race across the Arctic Circle, reflecting both personal camaraderie and the competitive tensions of their countries. Meanwhile, Louise, Arnie's wife, forms a complex relationship with Mikhail’s wife amidst her personal struggles with infertility and her distress over the conditions in Helsinki’s orphanages. Moved by the plight of the orphans, she initiates a plan to gather much-needed funds. As the race unfolds, it becomes more than a personal challenge; it mirrors the escalating Cold War tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. What started as a friendly competition evolves into an event with dire international implications, potentially leading to fatal consequences. The scenario captures the essence of personal relationships entwined with significant historical events, illustrating how individual lives are affected by global political dynamics.
