The Garšana archives

About this book

A collection of 1524 tablets that mention the estate of Garšana, in the Umma district are examined revealing an Akkadian community in the heart of Sumer during the Ur III period. The tablets are presented in transliteration, grouped by the archive assigned, and arranged by subject and chronologically. The largest and most unique archive, deals with labor and construction. Then follow the archives devoted to textiles and leather-goods production. The remainign grouops contain texts dealing iwith the feeding of workers, funerary and cultic matters, letters and legal accounts, those dealing with comestible and non-comestible products and miscellaneous topics. A tentative map is provided of Garšana geography indicating waterways and towns mentioned in the Garšana archives as a guide for future excavations.
