Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy (1943), a book written to defend the liberal model of capitalism against the "Marxian revival" that Schumpeter identified in the Western political economy of the 1930s and 1940s, argues that the great merit of liberal capitalism is its ability to deliver expanding wealth and thus enhance the welfare of citizens over time.
