Aquatic insect ecology

by James V. Ward

About this book

Begins with a brief overview of the insect orders with aquatic representatives. Continues with evolutionary considerations, habitat occurrences of aquatic insect communities and the relationship of these insects to environmental variables such as temperature, substrate, flow and water level, suspended sediment, light, oxygen and other chemical factors. Annotation Published: September 2016. An authoratively written, up-to-date treatment of the ecology of a group of specialized insects and a welcome addition to the ecological literature. Initially, Ward treats the evolution and the adaptation of insects to life in aquatic habitats. The major aquatic habitats for insects (ponds and lakes, streams and rivers, marine intertidal and oceanic) are discussed, with numerous examples of species present in each situation. Environmental conditions are treated extensively and include temperature, substrate, water levels and currents, suspended sediments, light, and dissolved oxygen. Lacking is any treatment of photoperiodic responses by aquatic insects. Numerous graphs, tables, and line drawings contribute to the book's usefulness. The list of references is outstanding numbering probably about 1500. Citations were selectively included, but even so, the list appears to be comprehensive and will serve as a valuable reference work. Indispensable for any library serving courses in ecology, entomology, aquatic biology, and invertebrate zoology. Graduate; faculty; professional. P. E. Lutz; University of North Carolina at Greensboro--Choice Reviews. This textbook, intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, provides comprehensive coverage of the ecology of aquatic insects. This volume, the first of two, presents an overview of the orders of insects with aquatic members, evolution and adaptation, habitats and communities, and environmental conditions in relation to the insects. Line-drawings, maps, graphs, diagrams, charts, and tables illustrate the text. References and an index are included. BIOSIS Abstracts.
