The otherwise brilliant Scottish itinerant Classics professor Thomas Dempster (1579?-1625) wrote these works on Scottish martyrs, a collection of materials rather than history proper, when he had settled down in Bologna, as a subsidiary to a projected large work (see Bib# 4102855/Fr# 328 in this collection). The works received a very critical reception by several Catholic scholars and a Roman Congregation. See M. A. Shaaber, Check-list of Works of British Authors Printed Abroad, in Languages other than English, to 1641. New York, 1975, D40 (incorporating D50 and D58); J. Durkan, “Thomas Dempster: a Scottish Baronius,” in: The Innes Review, 54 (2003), 1, pp. 75-78. Click here to view the Johns Hopkins University catalog record.
