Each volume, and the last piece in volume 2 (Poeticum duellum) have special title pages. The unenthusiastic reception of this edition in which the Scots Latinist William Lauder (c.1710–c.1771) unsuccessfully championed the neo-Latin verse of Arthur Johnston over that of George Buchanan as a set text for Scottish schools is said to have inspired Lauder’s campaign against John Milton.
