by Thomas Chatterton, George Gregory, Robert (ed.) Southey

About this book

Third of 3 volumes in 8vo. pp. [7], 537 (p. 397 misnumbered 297, p. 496 and 495 reversed), [7]. Signatures: [A]4 B-Z8 Aa-Ll8 Mm7. Half calf. Front endpaper has bookplate of Rev. F. Saunderson and of Mr. M.P. Manfield. Marginal notations, contains music. Gregory’s Life of Chatterton is here reprinted from Kippis’s Biographia Britannica, see Dictionary of National Biography. First edition of a three-volume collection of the work of Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770), edited by Robert Southey and Joseph Cottle, with some new material. Volume 2 contains the Rowley poems, for which Chatterton is best known. Ironically, these ambitious forgeries were never published under his own name in his lifetime: he claimed that the poems were transcripts he had taken from the work of Thomas Rowley, a fifteenth-century monk.
