8vo. f. [1], pp. [6], 138, 24. Modern boards, the first part lacking the errata leaf, possibly a secondary addition. First edition of an apparently apocryphal account of the 1527 Sack of Rome, followed by a spirited defence of the genealogy of the supposed author. Ostensibly an eyewitness account by a Florentine sheltered in the Castel Sant’ Angelo with Pope Clement VI and his forces, the Ragguaglio storico has also been described as an adaptation of the accounts of the Sack by Luigi or Francesco Guicciardini, or a composite plagiarism drawn from the Guicciardinis and Paolo Giovio’s Illustrium virorum vitae (1549). The ‘editor’ Adami identifies Jacopo Buonaparte as a witness ‘di sommo gusto ed erudizione,’ and states that his source was an autograph manuscript then in the Buonaparte family archives, but no trace of the author or his manuscript has since surfaced: see the preface to Carlo Milanesi, Il sacco di Roma del MDXXVII: narrazioni di contemporanei (1867), also questioning the contemporaneity of the language and particulars, ‘la inconstanza e difformità nella grafia de’ nomi propri, e qualche errore di fatto in che un autore contemporaneo non poteva cadere.’ Adami (ca.1720-1770) is best known as an antiquary and friend of Muratori, a revisionist historian of Florence, commentator on Etruscan antiquities, and latterly poet.
