8vo. pp. vii, [1], 215, [1]. Contemporary leather-backed boards. Very rare first edition of the celebrated romanticization of Sappho and her love life, allegedly taken from a Greek manuscript original, by an anonymous author ‘della Scuolo di Senefonte,’ and the prototype of much subsequent pseudobiography. Verri (unnamed here) offers this vulgar ‘translation’ while his ‘edizione del Testo greco [...] con accanto la traduzione latina’ are in preparation – though of course never forthcoming. Numerous reprints often pair ‘Le Avventure’ with Vicenzo Imperiale’s forgery of Sappho’s own Faoniade (first edition also of 1780, see Bib# 7650157 in this collection for the 1792 edition).
