Kerkhistoricus Erik de Boer beschrijft in dit boek dit tuchtproces in het kader van Brands leven en de scheuring in de Gereformeerde Kerken (vrijgemaakt) van de jaren zestig. Het startpunt van De Boer was de vraag: op welke wijze zijn de kerken omgegaan met de vijfentwintig predikanten en kerkleden die de Open Brief hadden ondertekend?
