This study was conducted by Chilton Research Services of Radnor, Pennsylvania, under the direction of B. Sussman of the Washington Post and J. Alderman of ABC News. The study consisted of two parts: interviews with school principals and interviews with the general population. 303 principals and 1,501 randomly selected persons throughout the United States were interviewed by telephone. They were asked questions about major school problems, curriculum, attitudes towards teachers, and school standards. Part one, the survey of principals, contains approximately 140 variables for each of the 303 cases. Part two, the survey of the general public, contains approximately 150 variables for each of the 1,501 cases.
