"This thesis develops a critical analysis of the expansion of Redwoods National Park in1978, an unlikely event which kicked an extractive industry off of formerly private lands and gave workers just compensation in the process. Examining the history of the Redwoods expansion through the lens of the Green New Deal (GND) demonstrates that a just transition away from fossil fuel extraction on United States federal lands is possible. In revisiting the Redwoods expansion through this framework, this project sheds light on a well-studied history, adding new detail to the process by which labor provisions were included in the expansion bill despite the contentious politics of the time." -- Page 5
