"The Society of Illustrators is pleased to announce a special exhibition of legendary artist Maurice Sendak’s work. Longtime friends and collectors Justin Schiller and Dennis M V David present a look at some of Sendak’s rarest pieces, including illustrations from William Blake’s Songs of Innocence, a booklet commissioned by his British publishers as a 1967 Christmas keepsake. It is the only remaining manuscript for a published Sendak title still in private hands and is being exhibited for the first time publicly. In addition to these drawings, this exhibition will include more than a hundred watercolors, ink and pencil designs for Mr. Sendak’s various book, theatre and commercial work. All of the works will be available to purchase. Work will be on display at the Museum of Illustration at the Society of Illustrators from October 23rd - November 3rd, 2018. Admission to the exhibit will be free during special hours (Monday - Friday: 10:00am - 5pm; Saturday - Sunday: 11:00am - 5:00pm). An Opening Reception will be held on October 23rd beginning at 6:00pm. An exhibition catalog will be available to purchase in the Museum Shop. This special edition catalog features 7 exquisite ink drawings and 22 pencil studies, accompanied by a brilliant essay written by Professor Robert N. Essick, comparing them to William Blake’s original etchings."--Society of Illustrators website, "Maurice Sendak Exhibition and Sale" (viewed 2018 November 27).
