In his set of variations on the Conde Claros ground for vihuela (Delphin de musica...1538), the excellent Spanish composer Luis de Narvaez (fl. 1530-50) provides conclusive evidence that the guitar and vihuela were regarded as two distinct instruments in sixteenth-century Spain.
