The UN Secretary-General and Secretariat

About this book

"This book offers insight into the pulsing heart of the United Nations - the Secretariat and its head, the Secretary-General - and examines what this organization does and why." "Behind the public face of the Secretary-General Kofi Annan and his predecessors, an active corps of officials and advisers unceasingly have applied the decisions of the debating UN. They constitute the acting UN and face ceaseless pressures and challenges. They initiate or contribute to policies and activities that affect the 191 governments represented in the "debating UN." As chief officers of the UN Secretariat, the Secretaries-General have included such innovating figures as Annan and Dag Hammarskjold."--Jacket.
