When Courage Was Stronger Than Fear

About this book

"More than twenty-five years ago, in Avenue of the Righteous, the original edition of this book, Peter Hellman wrote one of the first accounts of men and women who succeeded in saving Jews from the Nazis. Now, his portraits return in an expanded third edition. Included are six stories of remarkable courage, including the never-before-told story of Muslim Dervis Korkut, who saved a young Jewish woman, Mira Bakovic, in Nazi-occupied Sarajevo, and the remarkable bonds that have kept their families close until the present day. Hellman's depictions of high drama, heartbreak, and hope constitute a significant contribution to the literature of the Holocaust."--BOOK JACKET.
